Just after I moved to Holland in 2006 I wondered how homes of the Dutch look like. After drinking a cup of coffee and munching on the mandatory one cookie, people let me do my thing, which was taking photographs of the interiors of their homes. I was initially looking for the kitsch people decorate their homes with, something typically Dutch.
But somehow I seemed to be more attracted by what was hidden from the usual neighbour coming by for a visit. I almost always started somewhere at the end of the hallway, or upstairs, in the attic or the bedroom, gradually coming downstairs and taking a cheesy portrait of the inhabitants as a farewell.
I probably started with the bedroom because I found it exciting to be in a room which is meant for resting and being intimate. The bedroom as the backside of every-man’s living quarters, which can tell about somebodyʼs social status much better than the living room.
