I guess I visualised this picture even before leaving for the Balkans. Local lads jumping from the bridge deep down into the green Neretva river. Actually, this bloke was just showing off by standing on the edge, helping to collect money. When they gathered around € 50 in a hat, another man took his place and plunged himself off the bridge. Gracefully, the good old way. Precisely as I remember from old documentaries and postcards.

Travelling through the Balkans is a mental workout. Balkan countries have so many different visual impulses and different traditions that it is better not to define it rationally. The Balkans is irrational.

In the weeks to come I will be trying to bite through my pictures and post some more on my blog.

I have a strange love-hate relationship with pensioners on holiday. They are doing exactly what a respectable tourist should be doing. They are quite predictable, actually. But this sort can also be brutal, doing everything to be the first in the line in order to make a good picture, or rushing past a ticket office because there is so much to see in so little time.

The thing is, I am acting as a non-tourist, doing everything not to behave as them. But actually I am a just snob, still taking in the delights of all the regular tourist attractions.

It was great… it was… But now let’s give it for oranje!

Oh what a day, oh what a day it was as orange won again!

Summer is here, I am thirty years old and for the time being I tend to spend my evenings at lakes.

I asked myself whether I can capture some of the Dutch football frenzy. Initially, I wanted to see whether the city centre was deserted during the match against Japan. But not surpisingly so, the streets of my own neigbourhood were virtually empty at that time.
